Bhutan to host 31st Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia & UNWTO Regional Conference on Sustainable Development through Tourism.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.

UNWTO’s membership includes 156 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 400 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.

When responsibly planned and managed, tourism has demonstrated its capacity to support job creation, promote inclusive social integration, protect natural and cultural heritage, conserve biodiversity, generate sustainable livelihoods and improve human wellbeing.  As the sector is experiencing tremendous growth, collective efforts to ensure its long-term sustainability are essential.

UNWTO encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, to maximize tourism’s socio-economic contribution while minimizing its possible negative impacts, and is committed to promoting tourism as an instrument in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), geared towards reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development worldwide.

The 31st Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia (31st CAP-CSA), 57th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia (CSA), 53rd Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific (CAP) & UNWTO Regional Conference on Sustainable Development through Tourism will be held in Thimphu, Bhutan, 03-05 June 2019.

Sustainable Development Goals

The 31st CAP-CSA Joint meeting which is UNWTO´s principal annual event in the Asia-Pacific region will be attended by participants from UNWTO Member States, UNWTO Affiliate Members and international and regional organizations. Key topics this year will include:

  • UNWTO´s Programme of Work for the Region
  • Tourism and Ethics
  • SDGs, Sustainable Consumption & Production through Tourism
  • Gross National Happiness through Tourism
  • Other statutory issues related to the UNWTO Asia-Pacific Member States
